Knowing his only hope of defeating the overwhelming Persian armada will be to unite all of Greece, Themistocles ultimately leads the charge that will change the course of the war. To ensure his trust, Artemisia secretly murders all of Xerxes' closest associates. Darius advises his son Xerxes to end the war with Greece and leave them to their ways, declaring only the Gods can defeat them. Themistocles is first seen leading the charge at the Battle of Marathon, where he mortally wounds the Persian King Darius with an arrow to the heart. The film opens with the lifeless bodies of the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae. Themistocles journeys to Sparta to try and request their help once more. In politics and in counsel he is able to inspire and sway those around him with words of wisdom. On the battlefield he is a ferocious warrior, able to fight with several Persian Immortals at once. At the battle of Salamis, the Greek fleet are met by an overwhelming number of Persian ships. Themistocles heads to Sparta to converse with King Leonidas, but when he arrives he learns that Leonidas is consulting the oracle at Delphi after rejecting the Persian emissary. Eventually Artemisia grows weary of the battle and decides to let the Greeks enjoy their small victory. Xerxes advances on the corpse of Leonidas and beheads him to signify his victory. He replies that he does not enjoy warfare, but simply fights out of love for his country. When the Persians attack a second time, he lures them into a narrow crevice and his forces lay waste to them. Instead, Gorgo speaks with him, and he tells her of his plan to unite Greece. Themistocles requests the assistance of their navy, but Gorgo is reluctant to side with him, as she is only interested in the preservation of Sparta itself, not the whole of Greece. He acknowledged his defeat at the Battle of Artemisium, regretting his underestimation of Artemisia. The film then shows the Athenians, lead by general Themistocles, ambushing the Persians while they are docked. To this end, he even travels to Sparta to enlist the help of King Leonidas. Themistocles meets with Artemisia, who compliments him on his tactics. Darius' son, Xerxes, is also present, and dismayed by this. Gorgo ponders this as she weeps. The Persians subsequently retreat back to their realm, and Darius' admiral Artemisia arrives in time to hear the dying King's last words. She compliments his strategic skills, and asks him if he is a God. She impatiently demands why he has come, and again he makes his request. One night, Persians approach the Greek camp and inform Themistocles that Artemisia's ship is moored in neutral waters. He encourages his men to take a stand. Later, Athens is razed by Xerxes' forces, with the God King brandishing Leonidas' severed head. With the Greek navy in tatters, Artemisia assumes victory and withdraws her ships. Gorgo and Themistocles silently acknowledge their allegiance and lead the charge against the Persians. He deeply loves his country, but most of all he treasures his fleet. He eventually corners her on a wrecked ship, and the two engage in a fierce battle. Legendary Pictures has announced that Frank Miller is writing the follow-up graphic novel, and Zack Snyder was interested in directing the adaptation, but chose to move on to develop and direct the Superman reboot Man of Steel. He sends him back to Xerxes with a message of vengeance. He is devoted to Greek freedom and unification, to the point where he has not found time or interest in raising a family. With the arrival of Gorgo and the Spartans, Themistocles overpowers Artemisia and kills her, although not before giving her a chance to surrender, feeling it would be a shame to kill her. Themistocles brushes off the question, and she reveals that although he has made an admirable stand, she can sustain losses for months, and will eventually overcome his fleet. Artemisia then offers for him to join her side, even going so far as to sexually seduce him. Despite this however, she reveals that she can sustains losses for weeks, and her navy will eventually overcome the Greeks. In the next confrontation, the Persians pour oil into the sea and send in men with explosive kegs. Gorgo, Queen of Sparta (pronounced /ˈɡɔrɡoʊ/; Greek: Γοργώ) is one of the characters in the films 300 and 300: Rise of an Empire. Themistocles and Gorgo subsequently unite and lead the Greek forces into battle. Gorgo was civil towards him, though with a hint of mockery here and there. After recuperating with his remaining men, Themistocles learns that Leonidas and the 300 have been defeated at the Hot Gates. When he emerges again, he appears as a nine foot tall being draped in gold. He receives news of the Spartan defeat at Thermopylae, and instructs the messenger to carry this news to all of the Greek city states. Xerxes mourns his father's death for seven days, but Artemisia still lusts for vengeance on the Greeks, and uses the opportunity to twist Darius' words. He requests the service of the Spartan fleet, and tells her of his ambition to unite Greece, but Gorgo refuses him, as she is only interested in the preservation of Sparta. Meanwhile, Xerxes is relishing his victory at Thermopylae. In Sparta, Themistocles approaches Gorgo once more and requests their navy. Both of them duel each other to a stalemate, at which point the Spartans suddenly arrive with a fleet of their own, lead by Gorgo. Portrayed as level headed and rational, Themistocles is master stategist and tactician. The film is centered around the Greek leader, Themistocles, portrayed by Australian actor Sullivan Stapleton. Gorgo ponders this as she silently weeps. The Athenians promptly ram their ships into the Persians, gaining the upper hand. He is impressed by the spirit of Scyllias' son, Calisto, but his father does not want him to participate in the war. In Athens, Xerxes gloats of his triumph over the Greeks, but Artemisia is less enthusiastic over her failure to sway Themistocles to her side. After, Themistocles rejects her. Themistocles himself is nearly killed when his ship is destroyed in an explosion. Themistocles knows of her and her history. She then makes him a offer. During the battle, Themistocles sees a chance to wound the Persian King Darius, and shoots an arrow into his chest. The story pits Greek general Themistocles against the massive invading Persian forces, ruled by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and led by Artemisia, the vengeful commander of the Persian navy. 300: Rise of an Empire (previously titled 300: Battle of Artemisia) is the 2014 prequel to the 2007 blockbuster film, 300.
